She's dealing with an administration which includes the president as the president's own communications director. Mercedes Schlapp does not have an easy job as White House strategic communication adviser. She has to deal with a president that acts as his own communications director, multiple legal battles which could disrupt the strategy of communication for the administration as well as a host of Cabinet secretaries who are caught in their own controversy. Schlapp has kept her eye on the goal, coordinating policy implementation along with White House staff from the Political and Legislative Affairs team and policy shop in addition to broader communication. So far, her focus has been on issues like school safety, opioids, infrastructure, and trade. The position she holds, however, means that Schlapp has not been in touch with media. But, back in March, she was mentioned to be the candidate who would succeed Hope Hicks at the Communications Director position. The fighting has been nasty. Schlapp was a ally of Tony Sayegh, who was running for office. They started fighting in media. Schlapp said that after the Washington Examiner had published an article with negative comments about Sayegh's character, she called Sayegh to have a private discussion.
